Surrounding Area

Situated immediately north east of Mallaig, in the Western Highlands of Scotland, the Knoydart Peninsula is often described as 'the last wilderness in Great Britain', and is only accessible by boat from Mallaig or a 2-day (20 mile) hike.

The peninsula covers some eighty square miles of wild and beautiful natural landscape, with lochs and three munros (hills over 3000ft).

Things to do include: hill walking, mountaineering, sailing, stalking, fishing, wildlife spotting, or simply relaxing in the sheer tranquillity of it all.

A fifteen-minute walk takes you to Inverie village, the hub of the community. You will find The Old Forge Inn, The Pier House Restaurant, the Post Office/shop and the Knoydart Pottery. The Knoydart Foundation that owns and manages much of the peninsula has its office and display room here, where you will find lots of local information.
Doune Bay Restaurant, on the Western tip of Knoydart offers their special 'Doune Dining Experience' and can be reached by boat or on foot.

Iain and Jo will be very happy to advise to whom to talk about any activities in which you are interested.

Amongst the plethora of wildlife to be found here are the golden eagle, wildcat, deer, ptarmigan, otter, seal, dolphin, and even the occasional thrilling sight of killer, humpback or minkie whales, basking sharks and porpoise on the outer reaches of the Sound of Sleat and surrounding islands.
